In 1993 Uganda and Equatorial Guinea issued the first legal tender coinage with coloring from the mint, and not done aftermarket as an alteration. A mint in South Africa created the coin series for both nations. The coins were issued in two different denominations in copper-nickel and in silver. These same series, Famous Places and Jurassic Dinosaurs, were repeated in 1994. Today many nations have issued mint-colored coins, including the USA. Palau is often considered the first nation to issue colored coins but their 1992 and 1993 issues are actually fantasies. In 1994, independence from the USA officially came and transformed its fantasy coinage into legal tender. Papua New Guinea and Cubano would also issue colored coins in 1994. All three nations used different mints and coloring techniques. Today dozens of nations have authorized mint-colored coins and the popularity of these issues continues to grow.
