Description: Union-Castle Line – “Union-Castle Line Purserette” by Ann Williams Haynes, inscribed by the author, printed 1999, softbound w/ 152 pages. A young Ann Williams saw a help wanted ad in The Times for a Union-Castle "purserette". Applicants had to be between 23 and 28, have good school grades and secretarial skills, look good, and have the ability to deal with passengers “pleasantly and tactfully”. She applied, went for many interviews, and was one of a handful of young ladies hired by U-C out of hundreds of applicants. Williams wrote home frequently and those letters are the basis of the book. She first sailed on the TRANSVAAL CASTLE in November 1965. Over the next two years she also sailed on the CAPETOWN CASTLE, REINA DEL MAR, S.A. ORANJE, and EDINBURGH CASTLE. She shares photographs of her escapades ranging from frog racing to frying eggs on the boiling deck of the S.A. ORANJE. Excellent condition.
