Description: This yearbook contains no inscriptions or markings. It is in Very Good Plus condition with clean, bright pages, and a strong spine. It measures approx 9.25in x 12.25in. The ephemera comes from the graduation party held on June 01, 1950 at the Hotel Claremont in Berkeley. There are 2 programs that include the menu for that night, a souvenir b/w photo in a sleeve, and a song request card for the live band that evening (Orrin Tucker and his orchestra). The university was founded in 1855 as St. Ignatius Academy, a one-room schoolhouse on a cow path that would become Market Street. On opening day, three students showed up, for a student-to-faculty ratio of 1:1. The school remained an all-male campus until 1964. By 1858, the number of students grew to 65. The State of California granted the college a charter in 1859. In 1880, the college moved to a new building on Van Ness Avenue in the Civic Center (currently the site of Davies Symphony Hall). After the 1906 earthquake and fire, the college was moved to Hayes and Shrader Streets. The Jesuits acquired a small strip of property at the corner of Fulton Street and Parker Avenue, and in 1914, they completed the current St. Ignatius Church at that site. By 1927, to accommodate the growing student population, a building was built just to the east of the church and the college moved to its present location. In 1930, on the occasion of its diamond jubilee and at the request of alumni groups, St. Ignatius College was renamed the University of San Francisco. Robert Orrin Tucker (February 17, 1911 – April 9, 2011) was an American bandleader born in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, whose theme song was "Drifting and Dreaming". His biggest hit was "Oh Johnny, Oh Johnny, Oh!" (1939), sung by vocalist "Wee" Bonnie Baker. He founded his first band while a college student at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. Tucker's orchestra produced more than 70 recordings. The Claremont Club & Spa, A Fairmont Hotel is an historic American hotel that is situated at the foot of Claremont Canyon in the Berkeley Hills. The site was developed initially by an early settler, William B. Thornburgh, who constructed a large home there in approximately 1870 which he called a "castle". After his death, it was purchased by John Ballard. On July 14, 1901, a wildfire descending from the hills burned the house to the ground. On November 10, 1905, the property was acquired by Louis Titus on behalf of the Claremont Hotel Company for approximately $37,500. The Claremont Hotel Company was a group of investors that included Mr Titus, along with John Hopkins Spring, Francis "Borax" Smith, Frank C. Havens, and Duncan McDuffie.
