Description: UNLIKELY WARRIORS - General Benjamin Grierson and His Family leckie Norman 1984 University of Oklahoma Press., first US edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 6 1/2 x 9 1/2, FINE/VG CONDITION, xv, 368 pages, illus, maps, notes, bibliog., index. By the age of thirty-five, Benjamin Henry Grierson had been a musician, bandleader, and unsuccessful businessman, bandleader, and unsuccessful businessman. Early in the Civil War he became an unpaid aide to the commanding officer of an Illinois infantry regiment. A childhood accident had left him wary of horses, and he seemed a most unlikely candidate for distinction as a cavalry officer. Yet in 1863, Colonel Grierson led a cavalry brigade of 1,700 men on a daring raid through Mississippi, one of the most successful operations of its in the entire war. He emerged a national hero and by the end of the war was a Major General commanding a cavalry division in Alabama. . In the army reorganization of 1866, Grierson accepted an appointment as colonel of the Tenth Cavalry, a command of white officers and black enlisted men. For the remainder of his career he served on the western frontier. Appreciative of the achievements of his black Buffalo Soldiers and sympathetic toward the plight of the Indian people, Grierson did not fit the popular image of the Indian-fighter cavalryman, though in the Victorio War of 1880 he outfought one of the ablest of all Apache chiefs. Despite solid accomplishments as explorer, builder, builder of Fort Sill and other western forts, and developer of the Trans-Pecos region, Grierson was denied promotion until 1890, three months before his retirement. Grierson was often a victim of the personal enmity of General Philip H. Sheridan, but perhaps a greater hindrance to his advancement was the racial prejudice aroused against him because of his enlightened treatment of blacks and Indians. SHIPPING TIMES WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW FAST THESE NEW RATES WILL ACTUALLY BE, SO PLEASE BE PATIENT. WE ARE EXPERIENCING 2 – 6 WEEKS AS BEFORE DEPENDING ON THE CLASS OF MAIL USED. Shipments inside the US are also experiencing massive slowdowns, please be patient. Media Sometimes is taking 1 to 4 weeks with no rhyme or reason as to why. IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST THE TIMES STATED ABOVE. PLEASE DO NOT START ASKING WHERE IT IS IN A WEEK OR TWO AND ACCUSE ME OF NOT SENDING THE ITEM - SLOW DELIVERY TIMES BY THE POST OFFICE ARE NOT MY FAULT, PLEASE BE PREPARED TO WAIT THE AVERAGE TIMES I HAVE STATED. ( Due to be budget shortfalls and massive job cuts, and projected closing of many distribution centers, that are being implemented by the US Post Office - we are already seeing delivery times longer than was seen previously – please be patient ) WE HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR OVER 50 YEARS & WE KNOW BY BITTER EXPERIENCE JUST HOW SLOW THE MAIL CAN BE.
