Description: US 2624P - 2629P Complete Set of Modern Columbian Souvenir Sheet Proofs XFS NH. Exceptional condition. Very scarce opportunity to acquire the complete set of 6 Proof sheets of the 1992 Modern Columbians with conditions that are overall are XF to Superb. The $5 2629P being VFXF. Importantly this set is without the typical heavy gum bends and creases as noted by Scott. Any bends that are present are very light and do not show to the front. All the proofs are fresh. Photographed under natural daylight without enhancement. All sheets are properly phosphorescent tagged as confirmed under UV light. The $4 sheet showing some overlap of the phosphorescent tagging at bottom. When these proofs came to light in the late 1990’s they were deemed to be “printers waste” (discarded by the printer, illegally absconded, and therefore unlistable by Scott). This was due to the bends and creases that suggested they originated from a waste bin. They went unlisted for a decade. However, in 2003 they became Scott listed as Proofs 2624P, 2625P, 2626P, 2627P, 2628P, and 2629P. This change was attributed to the release of the American Bank Note Archives stock of modern material which was purchased at a sale by Arthur Morowitz who was a renowned philatelist and founder/owner of Champion Stamp in NewYork City. It became evident these Columbian Sheets, which were included in that sale to Mr. Morowitz, were indeed official production proofs along with several other early 1990’s issues which were also Scott listed. Very interesting history. My estimate is no more than 5-6 complete sets of the 1992 Modern Columbian proofs exist. Individual proof sheets offered at auction are scarce and recently have realized $750-$1000 and it’s not uncommon for a dealer to ask $1000 for a random individual sheet with unattractive centering of the intaglio vignettes. Scott catalog value for the set of 6 sheets, which has not changed in nearly a decade, is $4500. A great opportunity for a proof or Columbian issue specialist. Exhibit worthy!
