There were 175 ships built in the Fletcher Class of two versions, the round bridge and the square bridge types. Fletcher was a round bridge as built and later modified with a square bridge variant. Melvin was built as a square bridge type. Ships of this class served from 1942 to about July, 1972 in the U S Navy and continued to serve with quite a number foreign navies into the early 2000's. Of the 175 ships of the class, only four now exist as museum ships. USS The Sullivans (DD-537) in Buffalo, NY; USS Kidd (DD-661) in Baton Rouge, LA; USS Cassin Young (DD-793); in Boston, MA; and Velos (ex-USS Charrette DD-581) now located near Athens, Greece and is still considered as in commission with the Hellenic Navy.
