Description: The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, was opened to the public for the first time on June 12, 1939. As part of the festivities, which included the inductions of the first 25 members of the Hall of Fame, the Postal Service introduced a three-cent stamp (Scott 855) to honor the national game, which was (supposedly) invented in that upstate New York town one hundred years before. The first day of issue ceremony was held at the Cooperstown post office on that same day. This first day cover has a cachet by Ioor, and is very bright and well-centered. This handsome cover, with a parchment-style paper and a neatly typed address, is incredibly fresh and bright for an envelope that is 80+ years old. (There is some tape discolor on the back, probably when it was stored in an album.) Check the scans for details.
