IT IS A PART OF THE OKLAHOMA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD. FORMED FROM ELEMENTS OF THE DISBANDED 45TH INFANTRY DIVISION WHICH SAW ACTION DURING WORLD WAR II AND THE KOREAN WAR, ALONG WITH THE 45TH INFANTRY BRIGADE COMBAT TEAM AND 90TH TROOP COMMAND,[1][2] THE 45TH FIRES BRIGADE WAS ACTIVATED IN 1968 AS THE 45TH FIELD ARTILLERY GROUP, LATER REDESIGNATED THE 45TH FIELD ARTILLERY BRIGADE. THE UNIT WAS AGAIN REDESIGNATED 45TH FIRES BRIGADE IN 2008 WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ARMY TRANSFORMATION. JUST AS THE 45TH IBCT AND THE 90TH TROOP COMMAND, THE BRIGADE RETAINED THE SHOULDER SLEEVE INSIGNIA OF THE 45TH INFANTRY DIVISION, ONLY DESIGNING AND APPROVING ITS OWN SSI IN 1997. DEFINITION OF SHOULDER INSIGNIA: AN INSIGNIA TO BE AFFIXED ON THE UPPER EXTREMITY OF THE SLEEVE TO INDICATE AN ORGANIZATION, THEATER OF OPERATION, FORCE ABOUT US ARMY SHOULDER INSIGNIA: A SHOULDER PATCH, TECHNICALLY CALLED SHOULDER SLEEVE INSIGNIA (or SSI), IS AN EMBROIDERED PATCH WORN ON SOME UNIFORMS OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY. IT IS USED BY MAJOR FORMATIONS OF THE US ARMY, USUALLY BRIGADE OR DIVISION LEVEL BUT OCCASIONALLY BATALLION, AS IS THE CASE WITH RANGE UNITS. EACH FORMATION OR UNIT, WHEN DESIGNATED, HAS A UNIQUE PATCH. THE US ARMY IS UNIQUE AMONG THE OTHER BRANCHES OF US ARMED FORCES IN THAT ALL SOLDIERS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR THE PATCH OF THEIR HEADQUARTERS AS PART OF THEIR MILITARY UNIFORMS. SHOULDER SLEEVE INSIGNIA RECEIVE THEIR NAME FROM THE FACT THAT THEY ARE MOST COMMONLY WORN ON THE UPPER LEFT SLEEVE OF THE ARMY DUTY or COMBAT UNIFORM. SSI ARE SOMETIMES PLACED ON OTHER LOCATIONS, LIKE ON THE SIDE OF A COMBAT HELMET COVER TO FURTHER IDENTIFY A SOLDIER’S UNIT AFFILIATION. SHOULDER SLEEVE INSIGNIA WORN ON THE UPPER RIGHT SLEEVE OF AN ARMY UNIFORM DENOTES FORMER WARTIME OR COMBAT SERVICE. SUBDUED SSI: THE SUBDUED VERSION OF THE SSI CREATED WAS FOR THE BATTLE DRESS UNIFORM (BDU) ISSUED TO SOLDIERS FROM THE LATE 1970’s THROUGH THE EARLY to MID 2000’s. SUBDUED INSIGNIA PATCHES ARE PRIMARILY OLIVE DRAB GREEN, DARK BROWN AND BLACK, TO MATCH THE WOODLAND CAMOUFLAGE BDU UNIFORM. THERE IS ALSO A SUBDUED VERSION CREATED FOR THE DESERT CAMOUFLAGE UNIFORM (DCU) AND IT IS PRIMARILY TAN AND "SPICE" BROWN, TO MATCH THE DCU UNIFORM'S DESIGN. THE SUBDUED VERSION CREATED FOR THE ARMY COMBAT UNIFORM ACU IS THE SECOND MOST CURRENT VERSION USED IN THE FIELD TODAY. SINCE THE ARMY-WIDE ADOPTION OF THE ACU, SSI FOR THE ACU HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED. THESE SSI ARE PRIMARILY FOLIAGE GREEN, LIGHT BROWN, AND BLACK, THOUGH A FEW PATCHES ALSO FEATURE RED AND MAROON COLORS FOR SOME DETAILS. UNLIKE PREVIOUS PATCHES, THE ACU SSI ARE HOOK & LOOP / PILE BACKED, DESIGNED TO ATTACH TO THE LOOP or PILE FIELDS ON THE SHOULDER POCKETS OF THE UNIFORM, INSTEAD OF BEING SEWN ON. THIS MAKES THEM EASIER TO REMOVE AND REPLACE.
