The top of the double-cutaway body, which is connected to the later Santana model, is made of one-piece sapele wood with a splendid heathered grain. Sapele wood is a tree in the Meliaceae family, same as mahogany, and is mainly found in Africa. Its acoustic characteristics are similar to mahogany, with a rich midrange and sticky sound.
