Description: USNS GLOMAR EXPLORER T-AG-193 The ship was designed and built to recover the nuclear weapons and code books from the Soviet submarine K-129 that sank in the Pacific in 1968. Offered is a naval cover with a postmark from San Francisco, CA dated Feb 4, 2021. Blue photo of actual ship on cachet #3183 by Alvin Eckert USCS #9964. The 619 foot vessel was specifically built in Chester, Pennsylvania by Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock Co for CIA's Project Azorian, (Project Jennifer in the press) the 1974 Cold-War intelligence recovery/salvage of the sunken Russian submarine. This was one of the most expensive, complex and secretive operations of the Cold War period. Howard Hughes provided plausibility for this operation with the building of a "deep sea mining ship". Cover franked with 55 cent Flag stamp and a 25 cent SF Airmail stamp # C-36. Cover prepared on an Archive Quality Envelope without gum on flap. The vessel was held near the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet for many years, but was operating as a private company mining ship, until scrapped in 2015. Check out my other items!
