Description: USS NEOSHO AO-23 fleet oiler Pearl Harbor 1941 ship, first day cover with a postmark dated Jan 9, 2022 from Findlay, Ohio. Blue photo of ship printed on cachet #3182 by Alvin Eckert USCS #9964 Cover franked with a 3 cent USN stamp plus a 58 cent flag stamp # 5657 (FDOI). The cachet photo shows the USS California listing to the left next to Ford Island, the USS Neosho is found in the background at center. USS Neosho a 553 foot Cimarron Class fleet oiler was commissioned on 7 August 1939, and named for the Neosho River found in Kansas and Oklahoma. Built in NJ she was converted to an aviation fuel ferry at Puget Sound Shipyard. In December 1941, she had arrived at Pearl Harbor the previous day and unloaded her aviation fuel at the NAS Ford Island. During the enemy attack she escaped the Battleship Row danger zone by backing out and shooting down an enemy plane. She continued to serve with the Pacific Fleet carriers until the Battle of the Coral Sea on 6 May 1942 when she was sunk by enemy aircraft.
