The unique work, with an unprecedented subject, is in the tradition of Neapolitan Gouaches, which were famous throughout the world during the era of the Grand Tour. Although it remains faithful to the aesthetics, taking up an ancient landscape of Naples, and the style of the old gouaches of the 18th and 19th centuries, it offers us a contemporary touch, thanks to the technical skill of Vincenzo Smiraglia, probably the greatest Neapolitan gouache performer during the 20th century, and the last heir to the great Neapolitan tradition of gouache painters. The composition offers a view from above that embraces the port of Naples, visible in the distance, while Vesuvius towers majestically on the horizon, shrouded in light clouds and smoke that seem to float in a clear, blue sky. In the foreground, the wooded hillside of Vomero welcomes a couple of peasants: the man, seated on a rock, appears absorbed, while the woman, standing, seems to gesticulate animatedly, suggesting a moment of dialogue or narration. Their simple, brightly colored robes add to a description of popular life in Naples in the 19th century. Smiraglia's attention to detail is extraordinary: the trees in the foreground, with their lush, colorful foliage, exhibit a range of hues from green to brown, highlighting autumn tones. Each leaf appears to be painted with meticulous attention, giving the landscape a vibrant, natural quality. Even the rocks on the path show realistic texture, while the outline of the Charterhouse of San Martino building suggests a perspective depth that guides the viewer's eye to the gulf. The landscape of the Gulf is rendered with a brightness typical of Mediterranean days, in which the blue of the sea gently blends with the sky on the horizon. Smiraglia perfectly captures the clear, calm atmosphere of this glimpse of Naples. The smoking Vesuvius, tomorrow the background of the composition with its iconic presence, an immutable symbol of the Neapolitan landscape. As in the ancient gouaches of the 18th and 19th centuries, Vincenzo Smiraglia's style is based on incredible realism and exceptional naturalistic rendering of the landscape, combined with high chromatic sensitivity and harmonious composition. It is a Neapolitan gouache of great charm and beauty, of definite artistic value, made by one of the most talented twentieth-century interpreters of this pictorial genre, Vincenzo Smiraglia, a Neapolitan artist active in the twentieth century, famous for his art workshop in Sorrento where several generations of Neapolitan artists were trained.
