The unique work, with an unprecedented subject, is in the tradition of Neapolitan Gouaches, which were famous throughout the world during the era of the Grand Tour. In the foreground, the wooded hillside of Vomero welcomes a couple of peasants: the man, seated on a rock, appears absorbed, while the woman, standing, seems to gesticulate animatedly, suggesting a moment of dialogue or narration. Their simple, brightly colored robes add to a description of popular life in Naples in the 19th century. Smiraglia's attention to detail is extraordinary: the trees in the foreground, with their lush, colorful foliage, exhibit a range of hues from green to brown, highlighting autumn tones. Each leaf appears to be painted with meticulous attention, giving the landscape a vibrant, natural quality.
