Description: Hartzell Spence. Vain Shadow. Chicago: People's Book Club, 1947. Historical romance based on the discovery of the Amazon. Special edition (People's Book Club Edition); 428 pages; 8-1/4 by 5-1/2 inches; publisher's light blue cloth, red and gold lettering/decoration to the spine; dust jacket and endpapers illustrated by John Alan Maxwell. Nice mid-century design. A romantic biography of the Spanish conquistador Francisco de Orellana. In the introduction, Spence wrote: "Vast stretches of the Amazon River remain today exactly as they were four hundred years ago, when Orellana first saw them. The descriptions of the river in this book are as I myself saw it in 1941, and as you may see it if you will go there now. Within the past decade, a scientific expedition into the upper basin, bearing the most modern equipment known to civilized man, was forced by fierce savages and fiercer sicknesses, to flee the jungle. Yet Orellana, without medicines, maps, or scientific data, without even knowing where he was, transiently mastered the river four hundred years ago, an incredible achievement in the light of modern knowledge. "The reader is transported to the age of exploration and, in imagination, shares with a brave band of men the hardship and heroism of a journey across the bitterly cold Andes into the steaming jungles that lay beyond and on to the discovery of the great Amazon itself. You will be enthralled by its adult story of high romance, danger, faith, base cruelty and lofty purpose." John Hartzell Spence (1908 – 2001) was an American writer and founding editor of Yank, the Army Weekly, a weekly magazine published by the United States military during World War II. He is credited with coining the term "pinup". Jacket and endpapers are illustrated by John Alan Maxwell (1904-1984), an American artist known primarily for his book and magazine illustrations, as well as historical paintings. He also was an illustrator for many commercial publications, including Collier's Weekly, The Saturday Evening Post, The Golden Book Magazine, The American Magazine, and Woman's Home Companion.
