Description: After 60 years of collecting it is time to move my coin collection along. This is a very interesting and somewhat haunting commemorative issue of Constantine the Great which was minted in Nicomedia, a city in current day Turkey. This bronze AE4 measures 14mm in diameter and was issued by his sons after his death in 337AD. This design is of a particularly interesting and historic design. The coin is well centered and the obverse shows a veiled Constantine bust right with the legend DV CONSTANTANTIVS PT AVGG. The reverse has a haunting design that shows a shrouded Constantine standing front with the legend VN MR across the field. The “VN MR” legend is a Latin abbreviation for “venerandae memoriae” which can be loosely translated as “venerated memory.” The Nicomedia mint mark SMNA can be seen in the exergue below. This coin design is shown and referenced in RIC VIII 48. In natural sunlight it has a nice even medium bronze patina and presents well. After 60 years of collecting coins it is time to move my collections along to new homes so this one in this higher grade is going out with a very good price that you will not find anywhere else and I will provide FREE SHIPPING to within the US.
