Description: 105+ Velvet Queen Sunflower Seeds, Helianthus annuus Velvet Queen Sunflower Seeds (Helianthus annuus) For a splash of autumn colors: Try Growing a garden filled with Velvet Queen Sunflowers from freshly harvested flower seeds. Velvet Queen is a branching variety of Sunflower, which produces vibrant rustic Orange to Burgundy Red, with some Yellowing Center or Tips of the petals, accented with a dark brown center. Each plant will grow to a mature height of roughly 5 to 6.5 feet tall, and will produce large up to 8 inch blooms all over the top of the plant. Velvet Queen displays multiple flowers and will attract all sorts of beneficial insects to the garden as well. Some of these insects include butterflies, bumblebees, honeybees and hummingbirds. Categorized as an annual flowering plant, Velvet Queen Sunflowers will grow quickly from freshly harvested seeds. The plants will produce stems, leaves and then flowers, all within a single growing season. When the cooler temperatures of the late Autumn season arrive, your sunflowers will begin to wilt. Before the first frost, you can gather the seeds from your plants, just to resow the following year. Be careful however, to protect the seeds with a brown paper bag tied on and over the flowers sometime before your ready to harvest, because many birds will be after them as well. Sunflowers are among one of the easiest plants to establish from fresh flower seeds. They don’t take very long to germinate, they need little to no care, and aren’t too picky on soil conditions. Velvet Queen Sunflowers make an excellent cut flower for bouquets and floral arrangements as well. Grow Sunflowers along borders & fences or in flower beds as a background plant. Quick Facts Type: Velvet Queen SunFlower Color: Rusty Burgundy Orange Height: 5' to 6.5' Tall Width: 18" Spread Season: Annual Zones: All of the USA Environment: Full sun to Part sun Seed Count: 105+ Seeds Sowing The Seed Sunflowers are not particularly fond of being transplanted, but if started indoors, sow in peat pots, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. Sow at a depth of 1/2” under topsoil. Transplant entire pots into the garden, or direct sow when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. Stakes may be necessary to support your Sunflowers, only until the stems become strong enough to stand on their own. Growing Conditions Sunflowers grow long taproots and may rot if the roots become waterlogged. It is recommended to check your sowing area for hard, compacted soil prior to sowing. Renew any hard, compacted soil with a mixture of compost. Sunflowers will enjoy an area of full sunlight for the majority of the day and should be watered daily so that the soil is kept moist until germination has occurred. Germination & Growth Your sunflower seeds will begin to germinate within 7 to 10 days after sowing. Plants will grow to a mature height of 5 to 7 feet tall. Space your seeds about 6 to 12 inches apart from one another. Velvet Queen is an annual sunflower that produces 8 inch blooms in rustic shades of orange, yellow and red. How to Grow a Velvet Queen Add height and bold color to your garden with Velvet Queen sunflower (Helianthus annuus) varieties. With deep maroon, red and orange up to 8-inches diameter with flowers on 6-foot tall stalks, Velvet Queen adds height and visual interest to border areas, sunny hedges, flower gardens and vegetable plots. Plant this sunflower hybrid in a sunny spot and get ready to collect the abundant seeds in the fall. Or leave the seeds on the stalks to attract birds to your garden. 1. Pick an area of the garden that gets direct bright, sunlight for at least six hours per day. More sun is better for this heat loving sunflower. Plant sunflower seeds outdoors in early May. 2. Clear weeds, sticks and roots from the planting area and rake the soil flat. 3. Add fertilizer to poor soil. Velvet queen sunflowers generally don't require fertilizer in good soil conditions, but if you need to add a little extra nutrients to the soil, add a 5-10-5 fertilizer. See the directions on the back of the product package for amount and frequency of application. 4. Make holes about the diameter of your index finger and 1/2 inch deep. Space the holes in groups of three of four with 2 to 3 inches of space between planting holes. Space groups 2 feet apart. 5. Drop one seed into each planting hole and cover with 1/2 inch of soil. 6. Soak the area with water until it is damp to the bottom of each planting hole. Water whenever the top of the soil begins to feel dry to the touch. 7. Pull all but the strongest seedlings from each group when the seedlings are 4 inches tall. This will leave individual plants spaced 2 feet apart. 8. Remove the plants at the end of the season. Velvet Queen sunflowers are annuals that need to be replanted from seed each spring.
