VH1 Storytellers is a concert and discussion DVD by Bruce Springsteen, expanded from the airing of an episode of the VH1 television series VH1 Storytellers on April 23, 2005. Tied into promotion for his album Devils & Dust at the time, it was released in video form half a year later. The filming for the program and video was done on April 4, 2005 at the newly opened Two River Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey. He played guitar and piano and sang as he dissected his songs for meaning, sometimes line by line, frequently confessing at the end that his analysis was cooked for the show and that his original writing had been more subconscious. Wife Patti Scialfa contributed the occasional helping vocal. A question and answer session with contest winning audience members also ensued. An expanded and completely re-edited DVD version of Springsteen's historic April 4 “VH1 Storytellers” concert. In some ways this performance was a preview of the Devils & Dust tour, in other ways – the extensive introductions and interjections, the piano version of “Thunder Road” – it was a different thing entirely. Trimmed to under an hour for its VH1 broadcast, the stunning solo performance is greatly expanded here, nearly two hours long and featuring a total of 8 complete songs. With Springsteen's detailed comments, introductions and anecdotes on the songs' origins, as well as a previously unseen Q&A session with fans. Recorded in high definition, “VH1 Storytellers” includes a 5.1 Surround Sound mix and a PCM Stereo mix. Features Springsteen accompanying himself on piano, guitar, and harmonica. Patti Scialfa joins him on vocals for "Brilliant Disguise."
