The majority of vehicles/engines listed specify at least one type of asbestos gasket typically it was for a cylinder head or exhaust gasket. Many of the engine gaskets were used on passenger cars, trucks, tractors, jeeps, motorcycles, locomotives, construction vehicles, airplanes, marine engines and industrial engines. Victor gaskets were used during the war years in military vehicles as well as marine engines. Photos show the testing and manufacturing of asbestos products with what appears to be no protection for the workers whatsoever. Military Requirements - Victor products met U.S. Military requirements: "During the periods of conflict the largest part of Victor production has gone to military needs. The builders of heavy duty engines have called upon Victor to supply most of their requirements of cylinder head gaskets. Vast quantities of oil seals, some for the most critical applications, have been supplied the U.S. Government and prime contractors. Air Corps and aviation industry orders have run into hundreds of millions of pieces. The aim has been to satisfy urgent military needs and do as well as possible toward helping maintain the automotive transportation system." VICTOPAC, "a compressed asbestos or high pressure sheet packing. Long fiber asbestos and small rubber content- a superior grade packing of this type.” Victopac was made to meet Air Corps Specifications and was supplied to automobile, tractor and engine manufacturers as well as "many other industrial installations requiring high quality compressed asbestos sheet packing gaskets." Additional asbestos products listed other than asbestos gaskets include: Single Overlap steel-asbestos or copper-asbestos gaskets. Double Overlap steel-asbestos or copper-asbestos gaskets. Asbestos Rope Packing Asbestos Sheets Asbestos Wick Packing Corbestos – sheet gasket material with steel core with treated and graphite asbestos on both sides. Copper-Asbestos Compressed Asbestos Sheets (VICTOPAC) - meets Air Corps Specification AMS-3231 and 3232E. Wire-Woven Asbestos Packing Water Pump Packing - strands of long fibre asbestos yarn. Asbestos Millboard Brake Lining Shim Stock - same as Victopac, a compressed asbestos sheet packing. Special Note: The Armstrong Cork Co. produced cork sheet and cork gaskets for Victor,…“Made from selected cork granules with scientifically developed binders." Resin Bonded Cork composition or Corkloin was a cork sheet with a cloth interliner, has the qualities of cork sheet plus high tensile strength.” These products may have contained asbestos.
