Roth & Co. South Bend, Indiana, RED ROSES w/LEAVES & BUDS, GOLD Scrollwork & Garland on SCALLOPED Rim, circa 1908-1909 DESCRIPTION: This set was skillfully hand decorated by a talented artist. The design includes a large spray of red roses with green, yellow & brown leaves nestled in the grey ghost leaves to give depth to the design. The scalloped rim is trimmed in a dark blue with a band of gold scrollwork leaves and a hanging garland. The overall quality of the design is quite professional. CONDITION: While this set of 2 plates is classified as used, its condition is superb. We can find no defects or damage. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. Overall, the gold trim is solid & glossy. See the photos. DIMENSIONS: The plates have a diameter of 7 1/2" and a height of 3/4". HISTORY/MARKS: The history behind these is quite complex. One plate has only the red decorator mark for Higgins & Seiter. The red decorator mark is Made in Austria for Higgins & Seiter New York which operated in the 1887-1915 time period. The other plate has 3 marks including the red decorator mark. Crown China, Vienna, Austria is for John H. Roth & Co. which was established in 1909 in Indiana. It was specific to items imported and distributed by Jon H. Roth (trademark 'Jonroth') from South Bend, Indiana between 1909 and 1916. The 3rd mark on that plate is the P H Leonard mark (Crown w/2 Shields) which is cited in Dr. James D. Henderson’s Bohemian Decorated Porcelain and is attributed to the 1890-1908 time period. This makes the circa for these plates 1908-1909. In 1880, Peter H. Leonard started his import company after dissolving his partnership with Klingenberg & Leonard. Peter’s son, Harry P., joined the firm which bought whiteware from Bawo & Dotter, Count Thun’s factory, and other Bohemian factories. By 1890 the trademark in use was the crown with 2 shields. This Vienna China trademark porcelain came from Count Thun's factory. PH Leonard’s company bankrupt in 1898 after a Bremen, Germany bank forced an assignment. Apparently the same trademark was used by Leonard, Blakeman & Henderson, Bawo & Dotter, Charles L. Dwenger and Paul A Straub & Co. until about 1908 after the bankruptcy as they had acquired pottery from the sale of Leonard’s assets. The history behind Count Thun's porcelain traces back all the way to 1794 with Johann Webber and Johann Sontag receiving financing from Count Franz Josef von Thun in Klosterle, Bohemia, Austria, now Klášterec, Czech Republic. In 1904, the factory employed 650 while in 1910 the population of the entire town was only 2943. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
