After WWII, the U.S. Army wanted to develop a smaller better bayonet for their M1 Garands. They wanted something less expensive, easy to make, but still functional. The M5A1 was approved 1956. There were several manufacturers that made the bayonet, Imperial Knife, Aerial Cutlery, Columbia Milpar, J&D Tool and Utica Cutlery. Germany and Korea also made bayonets for the United States. Approximately 1.5 million M5 and M5A1 bayonets were made for the M1 Garand. Overall, this bayonet is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition, considering its age and history. The press catch is functional with average spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang and have a layer of light superficial oxidation and handling marks. They are both parkerized. The escutcheon screws have light tool marks and oxidation with strong slots. The grip panels are securely fastened and the checkering is distinct with no notable wear. The bayonet is straight with no signs of warpage. The blade's spine and sides have a light layer of superficial oxidation. Some of the finish has worn off the leading edges. The blade's cutting edge has no nicks or dings and appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The blade has been parkerized. The top of the guard is marked "U.S. M5A1 / IMPERIAL". The scabbard is in Fair - Good condition, considering its age and history. The belt hook hanger is securely fastened to the canvas frog. It mostly retains its original shape and swivels easily. Some of the finish has worn off. The canvas frog has no rips or tears and the stitching is sewn tightly. The retaining strap and snap are both functional. The metal locket has light oxidation and scrapes. It is securely fastened to the body. Part of the tip of the body is missing and has worn areas around it. The rest of the body has scrapes and scratches. Most of the original finish is intact. The front of the locket is marked "U.S.M8 / BM Co.". The back of the body is marked "VP / 40". This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your M1 Garand rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards.
