After WWII, the U.S. Army wanted to develop a smaller better bayonet for their M1 Garands. They wanted something less expensive, easy to make, but still functional. The M5A1 was approved 1956. There were several manufacturers that made the bayonet, Imperial Knife, Aerial Cutlery, Columbia Milpar, J&D Tool and Utica Cutlery. Germany and Korea also made bayonets for the United States. This was made by Imperial Knife Company. Approximately 1.5 million M5 and M5A1 bayonets were made for the M1 Garand. Overall, this bayonet is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition. The press catch is functional with stiff spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang and have light handling marks. They are both parkerized. The two (2x) grip panels are securely fastened to the tang. The flat head screws have strong slots. The grip panel checkering is distinct with no notable wear. The spine and sides have handling marks and scuffs, but no notable wear. Some of the finish has worn off the leading edges. The blade edge has no nicks or dings. It has its original factory edge and has not been sharpened. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The blade has been parkerized. The top of the guard is marked "U.S. M5A1 / IMPERIAL". The scabbard is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition. The belt hook hanger is securely fastened to the canvas frog. It is a little bit bent out of shape and has oxidized. The canvas frog has no rips or tears and the stitching is sewn tightly. The retaining strap and snap are both functional. The snap has verdigris where it meets the canvas. The metal locket and chape have impact marks, scrapes and oxidation. They both have been painted and some of the paint has worn off. The plastic body has scrapes and discoloration. Most of the original finish is intact. The locket is marked "U.S.M8A1 / PWH". This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your M1 Garand rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards.
