It was strategically important due to its location on the coast and its proximity to the demilitarized zone (DMZ) that separated North and South Vietnam.During 1969-70, the Vietnam War was in full swing, with American and South Vietnamese forces fighting against the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong. Da Nang was a critical hub for American military operations, serving as a major supply and logistics center for the war effort.The U.S. Marines were stationed at Da Nang, and the base was frequently targeted by enemy attacks. In March 1969, the North Vietnamese launched a major assault on the base, which was repelled by American forces. In November of the same year, a large number of Marines were killed in an explosion at the base's ammunition dump.Throughout 1970, the war continued to rage, and American forces gradually began to withdraw from Vietnam. In March of that year, the last U.S. ground combat troops left Da Nang, although American advisors and support personnel remained in the area for several more years.
