It was also involved in the search and rescue of downed American pilots and was credited with shooting down two enemy aircraft.In 1970, the USS Savannah was decommissioned and ultimately sold for scrap in 1972. Its service during the Vietnam War was recognized with several awards, including the Navy Unit Commendation, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and several campaign medals.
