Description: Vik Muniz is known for using materials like wire, sugar, dirt, and chocolate sauce to create images that he then photographs. In this work, Vik Muniz humorously appropriates the head of Medusa from Caravaggio’s c. 1597 painting of the snake-haired Gorgon from Greek mythology. He then transposed the photograph on to a ceramic plate. The swirling pasta noodles cleverly describe Medusa's head of snakes and the blood from Caravaggio's painting is rendered in marinara sauce. It can be displayed or used as a serving dish, allowing the Medusa image to be revealed as food is removed.
