Description: From a Tucson, Arizona collector's estate: Vintage Baule tribal bronze mask. The Baule people live in Cote de Ivoire (Ivory Coast) in western Africa. They have an ancient tradition of making ceremonial masks. Bronze masks such as this made by the lost-wax casting technique began to appear in the late 19th century. Obviously not made to wear, these masks were an art form that had its roots in the mining of gold which the Ivory Coast and Ghana had a lot of. Artisans learned the lost wax casting technique to make gold ornaments for people of wealth both, native and colonists. They then turned this skill to bronze and made masks, figurines and jewelry. This beautiful and heavy bronze mask measures 7½ inches in height and features a great detail of detail. Acquired by the collector in the 1970's at the Tucson Gem and Mineral show which has a large area dedicated to African art and artifacts.
