Felted wool in black with simple cream grosgrain ribbon zigzag decorations. A powerful hat made around wartime for the powerful women who stepped into "men's" jobs when men were deployed. Materials were scarce; hat styles lost their opulent, frou-frou looks; millinery decorations were simple. Woven label for Dana Marte, popular milliner from 30s through 50s. Stamped label for Corona. Made in Italy. I've attached period photos of Greta Garbo, Olivia DeHaviland and the lovely Lucille Bremer in their own toques, a la Hollywood. 22" circumference. 3" high at one side growing to 5" high at other.
