This item was included in a lot which came from an out of business antique store. I do not know the exact history or origin, it is unlabeled. However- the craftsmanship, design, size, and unique beauty show it's age and quality. The brown of the textile is a bit rough and heavy, otherwise I would think this piece were a blanket or wall hanging (not that it couldn't be used for these purposes).
