Description: Vintage Framed Print or Lithograph of one the the versions of The Tax Collectors by Marinus Van Reymerswaele This painting was inspired by The Misers by Quentin Massys now houses in Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein Dimensions of frame 24cm / 9" 1/2 x 20 cm / 8" In Good Vintage Condition “The Tax Collectors” shows two men counting and recording tax revenue. They are sitting at a table covered in a green cloth on which are scattered coins and pieces of jewellery. The foremost figure is writing with his right hand in a ledger while counting coins with his left. A second man behind him looks out at the viewer and is pointing at the ledger. In his left hand he holds a leather purse. On a shelf behind them are a pair of scissors hanging from a hook, various pieces of parchment, a candle with a smouldering wick, and an oblong wooden box, probably a case for a set of scales and weights. Acquired in 2008, the painting belongs to a group of around sixty variants and copies, most of which – including until recently this work – are attributed to the Antwerp painter Marinus van Reymerswaele. Since the present painting displays extensive evidence of changes made during the painting process, it has been recognized as the prototype for this group of works, and attributed to the painter Quentin Massys on the basis of a sixteenth-century source. The costumes worn by the figures, which were long outdated when the work was painted, and an extant description of a lost painting by Jan van Eyck showing a merchant with his client suggest that Massys’s composition in turn derived from fifteenth-century prototypes.
