Description: This commemorative stainless steel ashtray was a witness to a series of historical events in labor relations. Use it for display or use -- it's made of stainless steel, so it can stand up to being used as an ashtray or as a catchall for change, keys, or anything else. Here's a bit more info that I was able to find: Back in 1954, the President of the United Steelworkers of America (David John McDonald) and the CEO of United States Steel (Benjamin Franklin Fairless) hatched a plan to travel the country together to meet with labor and management representatives to hear their concerns and ideas. It was a radical enough experiment to have merited quite a bit of news coverage (See the last image, from the July 21 1953 edition of the NY Times) AND the manufacture of this ashtray for visits to plants in the Western states. I can imagine this ashtray sitting on a long table in a boardroom in Torrance, California or Vineyard, Utah as McDonald and Fairless talked to the representatives from the plants located there, learning about their mutual challenges and exploring ways to increase efficiency and promote the security of the company and its workers. Measures 6 inches across. I've only ever seen one other of this historical -- and functional! -- item.
