Vintage ~Joseph Turner~ Straight Razor 6/8 [Shave Ready]

Description: Here is some info on the razor in this listing. Afterward, there is my story and what I do if you would like to continue scrolling and read about that. Razor Information: Country/Region of origin- United States Maker/Made for- Joseph Turner Model/trademark- Width Size/grind- 6/8 hollow Blade condition- good Scales condition- new custom Additional notes/comments: This vintage straight razor was manufactured in the United States by Joseph Turner. I will include some information about the history of Joseph Turner at the end of these notes if you would like to read about that. The blade is a 6/8 hollow grind that shaves very well after being honed and tested. The scales are new hand made from emerald and purple color patterned acrylic acetate material. A nice straight for your consideration. Joseph Turner (1838-1907) was born in Sheffield, the son of James and Jane Turner. The family lived in Hague Lane / Norwich Street in the Park.Josephs uncle was a razor manufacturer and his father, James, was a razor smith. However, the latter died when Joseph was a boy (possibly in 1846). Joseph was soon helping to support his widowed mother. In the Census (1851), he was enumerated as a 12-year-old razor smith. According to a later account (Nutt, 19191), Joseph Turner learned his trade atWilliam Butcher, before becoming an accomplished razor maker for other firms. In 1870, Turner left for the USA. His passage was paid by Heinisch & Sons in Newark, New Jersey. Heinisch was emerging as a leading shear manufacturer, but he contracted Turner to help establish a razor plant. It was not a success. In 1872, Turner having saved as much as he could left Heinisch and with William Cowlishaw launched Turner & Cowlishaw as a manufacturer of razors in Meriden, Connecticut. It was a small operation, though apparently successful, and in 1876 Turner bought Cowlishaws share. Turner had links with the razor strop business of Joseph Rice Torrey (1828-1920), which was based in Worcester, Massachusetts (Pankiewicz, 19862). In 1880, after Torrey got the razor fever (Turners Testimony taken by the Subcommittee on the Tariff, 1888), they launched the J. R. Torrey Razor Co in Worcester. Turner was the president and Torrey the treasurer. Turner was the technical expert, whose patents included several designs for safety razors in the 1880s (Krumholz, 19873; Waits, 20094). In 1891, Torrey stated that about seventy hands produced about 40 dozen razors a day. The company supported the Tariff on imports. Joseph Turner died from heart disease at his home in Worcester on 25 February 1907, aged 69. The New York Times, 26 February 1907, described him as the first manufacturer of razors in the United States His sons William, John J., and Joseph H. continued the company. According to Nutt (19191), This concern has been for years the largest in the world among the companies manufacturing razors exclusively. The Turners became one of the richest families in Worcester, but this wealth was largely dissipated in the twentieth century. The business ceased trading in 1963. Some of the straight razors are well over 100 years old, so they might have a few cosmetic age spots, blemishes, or pitting marks that remained after restoration. My objective is to recondition the blade without compromising the integrity of the steel. Any blemishes or markings left after restoration are merely cosmetic reminders of its age and do not affect the use of the razor in any way. Honing -Idon'ttake any shortcuts when it comes to honing razors. In order to truly enjoy a straight razor shave requires a well honed blade with a keen edge from heel to toe. Every razor I list willhave a proper and thorough session on the stones. I scrutinize the edge through every phase of sharpening and refining. But regardless of how nice the edge looks or passes certain sharpness tests, the shave test is what truly counts. So before listing a razor, I will do a test shave to make sure it shaves close and comfortably. Afterward, the blade is sterilized and stropped, so it will be fully ready to use out of the box. My Story:About 10 years ago, I became fascinated with old straight razors and their history. After restoring my first vintage straight razor and seeing it brought back to life, I was instantly addicted and it became my main hobby and passion. I spent most of my time researching and diving into the past of these wonderful old razors. I also spent countless hours learning the art and craft of honing straight razors. I eventually built up quite a sizable personal collection of vintage straights, but I could no longer afford to continue purchasing razors and items needed to do the work & make the things I wanted to, like scales and strops. That is when I decided to start Duke City Vintage Shaving. That not only gave me a way to continue funding my hobby & passion, but also a way to do my part in trying to keep the art of straight razor shaving alive. I think it would be a shame to see this wonderful part of shaving history fade away and become a lost art. Not only is it awesome to hold and shave with a piece that is 100-200 years old, but in my opinion, straight razor shaving is the most enjoyable way to shave. With proper technique and a well honed blade, it is also the best shave you canget. These antique/vintage razors were made with superior steel and craftmanship and have stood the test of time. I take great pride in my work and do my best to make everything I list something someone would be very happy to have and enjoy. If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfied, I will always go above and beyond to remedy any concerns. I also have a no questions askedfreereturn policy. When I acquire a vintage razor, it will eventually go through a process before being listed in my auctions. Everything is done carefully and mostly by hand. Depending on the condition of the razor I acquired, it will have either alight orfull reconditioning. Eachrazor only ifneeded, willhave received the treatments listed below: 1.) Removal of active rust, dirt, grime, tarnish, oxidation, & corrosion 2.) Pins tension adjusted or hardware replaced if needed. New scales made for razors with damaged orseverelyworn ones 3.) Polishing both the blade & scales 4.) Honing, stropping, test shaving, sterilizing the razor, re-strop, placing in vci paper for rust protection If you are just starting out with straights, Irecommendwatching some tutorial videos on YouTube to get a visual. I don'tpersonally have a channel due to time restraints with my schedule, but Ihopeto in the future. There are lots of people whohave shaving channels that can be helpful. Take your time and go slow because there is a learning curve, but I promise you will get the hang of it with some practice. The razor has to be used properly to shave well. If you ever have any questions or concerns, pleasedon'thesitate to message me. Any stands, stones, soaps, brushes, or props of any kind used to display the razors are not included. International buyers are responsible for any import fees/taxes that your country may impose. I always drop packages off at the post office the same or the next business day after payment. It sometimes takes time for the tracking activity to update in the USPS system. Once ina while, apackage will miss its initial scan. Ifthathappens, itwon't show activity untilthe next stop. Saturday auction items are always shipped on Monday unless it is a holiday. Purchases during the week are shipped that same day or thenextmorning. Thank you for looking, & happy shaving everyone!
