Lillian Boettcher is perhaps the most significant figure in the history of art in Weimar, Texas. In 1967, Lillian Boettcher, a prolific and accomplished artist and Weimar native, opened a studio/gallery on Jackson Square in downtown Weimar, Texas. It was called the Sappho Studio and was located in a renovated downtown building on Jackson Square. The studio immediately began to host art classes taught by James Campbell of Ingram and Gloria Geldmeier of San Saba, both of whom had been conducting classes elsewhere. In later years, the name of her gallery/studio was changed from Sappho Studio to simply 'The Studio'. By whatever name, her studio quickly became the focus of the art community in Weimar and the surrounding area. Numerous artists conducted classes, workshops and regular lessons at the studio over the years and have included well known Texas artists such as Dalhart Windberg, James Campbell, Gloria Geldmeier and Gideon Stram. Boettcher also helped establish the Green Hills Fine Arts Club, which from 1967 through 1971 staged annual exhibits in the Texas Hill Country. Lillian Boettcher (1911-2002): Lillian J. Vacek was born March 6, 1911 in Schulenburg, Texas. As a young woman, she taught dancing. She married Frank Oscar Boettcher of Weimar, Texas, on July 4, 1926. In Weimar, she owned a flower shop (Lillian’s Flowers) and was a partner in her husband’s Pepsi Cola bottling operation. She also took up oil painting. She was one of the organizers of the Live Oak Art Club in Columbus, Texas in the summer of 1954, and was named a charter member of the club on July 6, 1959. She died December 24, 2002, and was buried at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Weimar.
