Description: An exquisite vintage set housed in a red-stained timber cabinet of five drawers with decorative brass hardware. Both are thought to be Japanese. Comprising 144 celluloid tiles including 4 flower tiles and 4 blanks, allowing for a second run of flowers/seasons if desired. The tiles are in exceptional vintage condition, displaying uniform colour and free from nicks and nibbles, the carving crisp and the paintwork bright. Each measures 26mm x 19.5mm x 12.75mm and features a gently rounded back. The flower tiles depict military personnel, most probably from the Xinhai Revolution of 1911. The characters 革命成功 translate as ‘a successful revolution’. The dovetailed cabinet has some minor damage; its sliding front panel has been reglued and is functional. Included with the set are the original bovine bone counters, 4 miniature bone dice in a timber coffin and a wind disc. A truly special set that any lady (or gentleman) would love to own!
