Case Steamer ADMIRAL EVANS: The Pacific Steamship Company's steamer Admiral Evans of 2,393 tons was built in 1901 at Toledo, Ohio as the Buckman. On March 9, 1918 the Admiral Evans struck a reef and was beached in Hawk Inlet off Chatham Strait, Alaska while inbound to the P.E. Harris Cannery. The ship was lured off course by a stray buoy and suffered two holes in her hull. The 91 passengers aboard were landed safely ashore by cannery tenders, and then brought to Juneau by the S.S. Princess Sophia. The salvage steamer Salvor was called in to refloat the vessel. The holes in her bottom had to be patched before she could be pumped out. The Evans went back to work and was finally scrapped in Japan in the 1930’s.
