Description: Mary Grabill Graylor Art Pottery Motto Mug "It is better to live rich than to die rich" This is hillbilly art at the finest, literally primitive backyard chicken coop pottery, rendered in a most professionally artistic way. Mary represents a unique aspect of the early to mid-20th century Ohio Art Pottery world, dominated by commercial makers like Roseville, Weller, Rookwood, Hull, etc. - each piece of Mary's pottery was truly "Art pottery", hand made by her, not factory produced. Mary A. Grabill, born February 12, 1919, attended Ohio State University majoring in arts and sciences. In the mid-40's Mary turned the family's backyard chicken coup into a pottery studio called Graylor, where she learned to make uniquely earthy useful pottery. Mary made her pottery from the "mud" from the land where she lived. Mary also lived and studied pottery for a time on Martha's Vineyard and in Florida. Her mugs have become particularly collectible because of the folksy sayings on them. Mary died in 2008, at 88 years old.Signed on the bottom with Mary's Pottery's name, "Graylor", and her logo, a flying duckRed clay is glazed in a mustard yellow slip glazeYellow glaze then worked in sgraffito method, revealing red clay body color underneath and creating the designThe entire piece then covered in a clear finish glazeHefty mugs measure approximately 4 inches tall, 4 inches in diameter at the widest part and 5 inches wide with the handlesNo two are exactly the same size or alike as they were hand-madeHand washExcellent gently used condition - this was owned and put in a china cupboard for many years and not used no chips or cracks My parents are life-long collectors and slowly beginning to sell off their personal collections.
