MataOrtiz pottery was inspired by the Casas Grandes (Paquime) ceramicsoriginally found at the prehistoric archeological ruin near Chihuahua, Mexico. StartingIn the early 1970's, Juan Quezada began reproducing this type of pottery in theauthentic traditions of Casas Grandes.Theentire pueblo of Mata Ortiz, mentored by Juan Quezada, later began creatingoutstanding handmade, coiled pots or “ollas”, following these centuries oldmethods. Inspired by the Paquime, Casas Grandes ceramics, the potters of MataOrtiz create contemporary works of art, often incorporating Mimbres designsshared by the southwest Native American cultures such as the geometric typedesign found on this clay pot. The potsare formed by hand using locally sourced clay from around the village withoutthe use of a pottery wheel and then painted using natural made paints. Thepottery is dung-fired on the ground without the use of a kiln. This Mata Ortiz piece is unsigned, but it is clear that it was crafted with care and precision. Measuring 6.5 inches in diameter and 5 inches in height, this pottery is perfect for display or for use as a decorative piece. Whether you are a collector or simply appreciate the beauty of ceramic earthen clay pottery, this piece is a must-have.
