Description: Vintage early 1900’s era Moravian Benigna cloth doll. 5 inches. Hand painted facial features, floss hair, original sewn-on costume including gown, apron, slip, pantaloons, shoes, headwear, shawl, bag. Embroidered blanket stitch on the tote. Moravian Doll originated and made by the Bethel Circle of King's Daughters The First Moravian Church Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The doll is named after the Countess Henrietta Benigna Justina, the daughter of Count Nicholas von Zinzendorf. Benigna founded the first Moravian School for Girls in 1742. It was the first Protestant boarding school for girls in America. Her costume was copied from those worn by Moravian women around 1872. Handmade by the women's group. Cloth covered wire body and limbs. The embroidery thread color depicts the woman's place in life and in this case, blue represents a married sister. Very hard to find cloth doll for the more sophisticated cloth doll collector. From my personal collection. Very good condition, with overall age related fade. No card. clean, odor free, smoke free shoppe, no other accessories or stand. Combined shipping available. Layaway available.
