This is an original vintage handmade Pawleys Island "Rice Planters" Rope Hammock. Original Rice Planters model #11 rope hammock. It is made from sturdy cotton blend rope and has 48” wooden spreaders that add to its comfort. This was used one Michigan season so it looks and feels in very nice condition. This isn’t a cheap target one. When on the frame (separate accessory), it measures 11 ft 4 in long, so this can be hung on a frame or between trees. Comes with the metal hanging hardware hooks. The hammock alone weighs 10 lbs. I also have the frame available but it would need to be local pickup. The story behind these hammocks relates to a river boat captain in the late 1880's, and I found the story behind the hammock's origin interesting and adds to the hammocks history and popularity. Briefly, the story of the origin of the hammock is as follows: The captain found his grass-stuffed mattress on the boat too hot for sleeping during the South Carolina summers and even the hammocks of the time were not made out of breathable material. Striving for a more comfortable sleep, in 1889, the riverboat captain designed a hammock to be as breathable and comfortable as possible. His creation consisted of cotton ropes and was weaved in such a way that there were no thick knots where he would lay. The invention of this comfortable hammock would one day become the basis for the livelihood of the Lachicotte family, a symbol of the relaxing culture of the area, and contribute to the economic development of Pawleys Island.
