Description: Vintage Papua New Guinea Abelam Wosera Tribe Hand Woven Yam Mask P.N.G. This mask was acquired about 50 years ago in Cairns, Australia from an antique Vintage Dealer in Native Tribal Papa New Guinea Artifacts. Some were from dated from the early 1900s, or even late 1800s.Do not know the exact age of this mask. This is part of my private collection I had in the attic that I am selling. The Abelam live in the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea and are divided into several subgroups; the most prominent is the Wosera, who are so named after the area they inhabit. This is the southernmost group of the Abelam. The other groups are named for geographic direction: northern, eastern, etc. The whole region is called Maprik, named after the Australian administrative post established in 1937 in the heart of Abelam territory.
