Description: A wonderful little tourist booklet, entitled “Camera Shots of Ghost Cities of California and Nevada” featuring pictures of some of the Golden State & Silver State’s many ghost towns, almost all of them old mining communities. The handy (5.5 x 8) 32-page guide features a map of these towns, as well as black & white photographs documenting their decay (from The Shafter Press, 1941). The book is from over 80 years ago, when some of these boom & bust towns had only recently gone belly up, and all had done so within the lifetimes of some of the readers (California & Nevada were very young places then). The photographs are an extraordinary record of that lost world, including the old Fresno County Courthouse (in a forgotten place called Millerton), the abandoned Bowers Mansion (located outside of Carson City, built by Comstock Lode chancers) and Goldfield’s million-dollar hotel (still full of its original furniture but completely empty of people). There are also two small black & white photographs independent of the booklet (from Bear Photo Service, 1936), featuring tourists in one of these ghost towns (probably Rhyolite, Nevada, located near Death Valley National Park).
