Description: This is a wonderful small tilting counter jar of the kind one used to see in country general stores, holding candy, bulk foods, or other provisions. With two slanting faces, the jar is designed for easy access to the contents without removing it from a shelf. It can stand on its base or rest on its side at an angle, making it possible to scoop out contents from the front. It's a petite version of the slant jars one normally sees, and stands out for the addition of the wire bail handle for holding or hanging. The design of this jar was patented. E. W. Fuerst received design patent 86712 from the US Patent Office on February 13, 1932 (see the last picture). As the drawing for the patent shows, this type of jar was designed to be used with a bail handle but many examples being sold today lack their bails. The patent number of this jar is molded right into its base in the raised mark "DES. PAT. 86712" along with the oval-in-diamond logo of the Owens-Illinois Glass Company of Toledo, Ohio, that manufactured it. The number 7 molded to the left of the logo indicates that this jar was made in its Alton, Illinois, plant. The single number "2" without a period to the right indicates an early manufacturing date. The number "4" below represents the mold number. The example here has a well-fitting metal lid. The jar measures about 5 1/2 inches wide at widest point, 3 1/2 inches deep (on the ribbed sides), and stands about 6 inches to the top of the metal lid (6 1/2 inches with the handle up).The tin lid shows lots of wear and weathering, and screws on and off easily. The jar itself is in terrific shape, with no chips or cracks or other significant damage You are purchasing a vintage glass storage container with some ribbing on the exterior a wire bale for a handle and a lid. There may be some minor scuffs and scrapes from years of general use.
