Description: Vintage RAF Jacket No1 Dress Flight Lt (Navigator) 1950/60 Moss Bros London Ltd. Here is a vintage jacket of an RAF Flight Leiutenant (Navigator), complete with Navigator's embroidered brevet, being a single-winged letter 'N' wrapped in a laurel wreath. The jacket is a single-breasted, four pocket Service Dress jacket of blue-grey fabric, featuring an open notched collar, four button front fastening, pleated breast pockets with scalloped button flaps, bellows skirt pockets with rectangular button flaps. There is a right waist ticket pocket and an integral waistbelt of matching cloth secured at the front by a double-pronged staybright buckle. All buttons are Queen's Crown RAF pattern in staybright finish. Around each cuff is sewn the RAF rank braid denoting Flight Lieutenant, that being two thin stripes of light blue both flanked either side by black stripes. There's no sizing on the jacket but I would say that the chest size is 36"-38". I'm a 38" chest and it's wearable but snug. Length I would suggest would suit a wearer of 5'8" to 5'10". Belt waist size I make 28/32". Dating the jacket is a little tricky in that there is no date evident on the label but there are a few clues: First are the Queen's crown buttons, which suggest that the jacket is post 1952. Second is the telephone number on the label which is Covent Garden 4567. Four digit numbers preceded by the area name were I believe phased out from 1958. Prior to that it was the norm to dial '0' for the operator and say Covent Garden 4567. Later that was shortened to COV 4567 and then later still area codes were introduced. Lastly, staybright buttons were introduced in the 1950's which helps a little. So, my laboured point is that by my reckoning, the jacket originated between 1952 and 1958. Not cast in stone of course so please may I suggest that you do your own research if the date is or particular interest. The peramiters that I've come up with cover the later part of the Korean War and are bang on the Suez crisis. I'm not confirming that the navigator who owned this jacket was involved in either campaign, I'm just trying to highlight the era. A couple of points on condition: Generally good given the age of the jacket. No signs of rips, tears or moth holes and the lining is intact. One of the rear belt anchors has become detatched but easily repaired I would think if you're handy with a needle and thread. Maybe some very minor marks but nothing to me of any particular note.
