Vintage RARE 1950's Shure Brothers 9898 crystal microphone w stand Turner Ampex

Description: Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome. You are looking at a very nice and rarer Shure Brothers 9898 model crystal microphone from the late 1940's or 1950's that is very similar in size and shape to the Electro Voice 920 "Spherex" model. This mic comes with a lower adapter that accepts the head and screwed onto the Atlas gooseneck and Atlas DS-5 desk stand provided. This is one of Shure Brother's earlier mics and it's a strange mic indeed. There was no pistol grip or threading for a stand on this mic. It simply accepts an offset female 3 pin connector. I'm not sure if these were meant to be handheld or not but this would make the ultimate harp mic due to it's size and shape. It fits nicely in the hand and super easy to cup for use with a harmonica. It should be noted that the original element no longer works as to be expected but is still present underneath the grill. A Shure Controlled Magnetic element would really set this mic off though if one chooses to do the modification. There are very few 9898 mics out there and this one is in pretty dang nice condition. The mic has an all metal body with satin chrome finish. It has an absolute minimum of wear as you can see in the detailed pics provided. The globe is free of dents but there is extremely lite tarnish. It still has a perfect inner silk screen and all the screws are original too. Even the Shure badge looks pretty nice as they are generally well worn. It's completely legible. Again, the mic comes with lower adapter that you can unscrew from the gooseneck. The short 2 foot cable runs though the gooseneck and runs out the bottom so you can unscrew the gooseneck from the base of the stand as well if needed. Cable has the vintage female Cannon XLR end connector that is wired correctly so if you ever put a usable element in this mic it's wired for use. The cable is soft, pliable and free of damage. The Atlas DS-5 base makes for a stable platform and compliments the mic nicely and shows a minimum of wear. It's a cast iron, stock painted base and has 3 original rubber pads on the bottom. Total height with mic and base is appx 18 inches tall (when fully raised upright) X 6 inches wide. A beautiful mic that's an easy 8 + cosmetically on a scale of 1 - 10. Keep it in the mic collection or get this up to par for any live event. Your choice? As with all my vintage items... I can promise you will be happy with it for the price paid.
