Description: Here is a very interesting group of watercolors I believe painted by Ms. Edna Root. She was a prominent artist, philanthropist and animal lover who was born in 1917 and passed away in 1987. Born in NYC she studied at The Parsons School, The Arts Students League and The New School and was known for abstract expressionism and still lifes. She had homes in both San Francisco and Palm Springs and served on the board of directors of The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco and eventually established the Edna Root Curatorship of American Painting. She was also the heir to the very well known Simplicity Pattern Company. Many of her works are in museums and galleries throughout the US and her most expensive work "English Garden" sold for $2000 at Christies in 2020. This set of colorful fish drawings are all framed in yellow and to me are a great example of the 1960s artwork that was being produced that were very similar to the Beatles "Yellow Submarine" phase. Whimsical, free flowing ,vibrant and mod they certainly hark back to a time of "peace and love and everything groovy". Interestingly the signatures are all written in cursive while all her other works were signed in print format. Is it possible an assistant signed these for her? Did she feel these were more suited to a cursive signature? Could they be forged and why would someone forge Ms. Root? A little bit of a mystery for sure but I feel they're probably authentic looking at the frames and colors and stickers on the backs of them. The Great Frame Up started in Chicago in 1971 and all the evidence certainly points to these being from that time period. Maybe these were some of the fish floating by John, Paul, George and Ringo in their "Yellow Submarine" movie! Thanks for looking.
