Description: Vintage SR Semi Pro 23" model 15 speed touring bike. This beige frame is the long chain stay touring version The SR Apex triple chainring crankset has 52/40/28 tooth chain rings so climbing the steepest grades will be easily manageable. The long cage rear derailleur will shift up to a 32 tooth rear cog. The 5 speed cog is 14-28. The freewheel can be swapped out for a 6 or even 7 speed freewheel in the future if you feel like adding more gears or lower gears. Frame dimensions: Seat tube (c-c) 57 cm Seat tube (c-t) 58.3 cm or 23" Top tube (c-c) 57 cm Stand-over height 33.25" Semi-Pro bikes came standard with 27 x 1-1/4" wheels. Not a lot of tire size choices with this wheel size. If you swap these wheels to 700c clincher wheels the sky's the limit as far as tire options go. The Dia Compe side pole brakes will accommodate either 27" or 700c wheel sizes if you decide you want to ever change the wheel size. By the way, SR Bicycles had no affiliation with the Sakae Ringyo Japanese component company who also used "SR" to describe their products. However, SR Bicycles frequently used Sakae Ringyo (SR) stems, handlebars and seat posts for their own bikes.Maybe SR chose that name for their company hoping that the American public would assume that Sakae Ringyo indeed made their bikes. We'll probably never know exactly what SR stood for. SR Bicycles was a USA company based in the San Diego area in the late 1970s that ceased operations by the mid to late 1980s. They had all their bikes made entirely in Japan - meaning the frames were brazed, painted and assembled there and then shipped to the San Diego area. SR Bicycles contracted with Araya, Bridgestone, Panasonic and Miyata to produce their frames. Tange Champion #2 butted chrome-moly lightweight steel tubing was used almost exclusively on all their top models. Tange Champion #2 is to Japan what Columbus SL tubing is to Italy or what Reynolds 531 is to England. SR used only the best Japanese components on their various models: SunTour Superbe, SunTour Cyclone, Shimano Dura Ace and Shimano 600. The Semi-Pro used Shimano 600 for their builds. I acquired just the frames so I used my own choice of components. Most Semi-Pro bikes I have seen had the letter "M" in the serial # which denotes Miyata brazed the frames. Most Professional model bikes I have seen had the letter "A" in the serial # meaning Araya created the frames. Araya was more known for their rims but they did also have their own line of bicycles. I have been told they brazed frames for a lot of other companies both foreign and domestic Japanese.
