Description: Vintage1980s Oaxaca Mexico Black Clay Hand Made Aztec Mayan Maize God Face Mask I purchased this mask in Oaxaca, MEXICO from the artist during a vacation in the 1980's. It was hand carried home and remains in the same condition as when purchased. It had hung on my wall, supported by two nails for decades now and it is time for it to find a new home. Mask has two holes at the top of headdress for hanging on wall with wire or using nails. Wall hanging strips could also be used. For a tabletop the mask could be displayed on plate easel. Please review the photos as they are a major part of the description of this unique piece. The mask will be carefully wrapped and shipped via USPS Priority Mail with a tracking number. One of the most representative, unique, and popular items produced in the state of Oaxaca, is the beautiful barro negro, or black clay pottery. Known for its color, sheen, and intricate designs, black clay pottery is one of the most popular styles of pottery in Mexico, which dates back to the pre-Columbian era. The color of the black clay pottery is due to the properties of the clay, which is found in the valley surrounding the region. The process of separating the clay from the rest of the soil can take up to a month. After this process is completed, each piece takes an average of 20 days to complete. The Zapotec Indians in Pre-Hispanic Mexico began this traditional pottery making method. The clay is molded and spun by hand without the use of a wheel. After the shaping, the pieces are set out to dry in a well-insulated room for a lengthy period of time. When it is almost completely dry, it is polished if desired. The surface of the piece is lightly moistened and burnished using a quartz crystal, which produces a lacquer-like silver luster. This is also the stage when decorative accents are added with knives and other tools. Finally the pieces are fired in underground pits or above-ground kilns, using wood fires that heat the pieces to temperatures between 700-800°C. When completed, the polished pieces are a shiny black color and the unpolished pieces have a grey matte finish.
