He was instrumental in the development of the "American Sound" in classical music. While living in Paris his friendships included such cultural figures as James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, E.E. Cummings, Ezra Pound, Aaron Copland, Igor Stravinsky, Pablo Picasso, Orson Welles, Jean Cocteau and Gertrude Stein. In 1948 he won the Pulitzer Prize in Music for his score for the film Louisiana Story. Other film credits include: The Plow that Broke the Plains (1936) The River (1938), The Goddess (1958).
