Virginia had never had a full-scale history. There were, of course, the works of early chroniclers such as Captain John Smith, the later partial accounts of men like Hugh Jones, William Byrd, and Robert Beverley, and the whiggish History of the First Discovery and Settlement of Virginia (1747) by the Reverend William Stith. Stith, the Oxford-educated rector of the parish of Henrico and president of the College of William and Mary, did produce a work of considerable scholarship, but it covered only the colony's first seventeen years. It was John Daly Burk, an Irish emigre, who published during the first Jefferson administration the first comprehensive History of Virginia, From Its First Settlement to the Present Day (3 Volumes, 1804-1805). PREFACE - Makers of Virginia History. "Virginia has been called the 'Mother of States andof Statesmen' — a compliment justly due the "OldDominion." In this little book an effort has beenmade to give biographical sketches of some of thosegreat leaders who have placed Virginia in the forefrontof American states. One great difficulty, however, haspresented itself to the author in preparing these sketches :the impossibility of treating the many great men whomour state has produced. When we consider, in ad-dition to those who are treated here, such names asMorgan the Thunderbolt, Wythe, Giles, the Barbours,Gary, Garrington, the many Lees, Doddridge, Baldwin,Tazewell, Taylor, the Masons, Stewart, Leigh, Graysonand scores of others, there seems to be no end toVirginia's distinguished sons. Each locality in the stateundoubtedly has some citizen who can truly rank asa maker of Virginia history, though his name is not men-tioned in this book. Our purpose, therefore, has beento select only a few characters in the different periodsof our history, and to narrate the chief events in theirlives in such a way as to give the story of Virginiahistory from 1607 to the present day. We believethat the best way to teach Virginia history is by holdingup before the boys and girls the deeds of those menwho have done so much in the making of our history, and at the same time to give them, on a whole, charactersworthy of their imitation. Children should get fromtheir school work laudable ambitions, and there isno better way to stimulate and inspire them thanthrough the history of our great men."
