Description: This is a 1922 Stanford University Quad yearbook. It is in very good condition. There are individual photos of each graduate, and each graduate's photo is accompanied by his/her name. There are a number of very attractive artworks depicting the campus, drawings by California artist and director of Stanford's art museum and gallery Pedro J. Lemos. Sports teams photos are included. Perhaps the most notable person pictured is Charley Paddock on page 176. Although Paddock didn't attend Stanford, he is shown "breaking the tape" as a member of the University of Southern California team at a race against Stanford. Paddock became especially well known as a result of the movie Chariots of Fire. Wikipedia writes: Charles William Paddock (August 11, 1900 – July 21, 1943) was an American athlete and two-time Olympic champion. After serving in World War I as a lieutenant of field artillery in the U.S. Marines, Paddock studied at the University of Southern California. There he became a member of the track and field team, and excelled in the sprint events. He won the 100 and 200 m in the first major sporting event after the war, the 1919 Inter-Allied Games, in which soldiers of the Allied nations competed against each other. Paddock was the first person named "The fastest man alive". In 1920, Paddock represented his country at the 1920 Summer Olympics. In Belgium, he had his greatest successes, winning the 100 m final, while placing second in the 200 m event. With the American 4 × 100 m relay team, Paddock won a third Olympic medal. Paddock became famous for his unusual finishing style, leaping towards the finish line at the end of the race. At the 1924 Olympics, Paddock again qualified for both the 100 and 200 m finals, but he was less successful than four years earlier; he finished 5th in the 100 m and won another silver medal in the 200 m. Paddock was not a part of the American relay team. In Chariots of Fire, the 1981 Oscar-winning film about those races, Paddock was portrayed by Dennis Christopher. During a five-decade career with the Unites States Bureau of Fisheries, United States Fish and Wildlife Service and its Bureau of Commercial Fisheries, and the National Marine Fisheries Service. Sette pioneered the integration of fisheries science with the sciences of oceanography and meteorology to develop a complete understanding of the physical and biological characteristics of the ocean environment and the effects of those characteristics on fisheries and fluctuations in the abundance of fish.He is recognized both in the Unites States and internationally for many significant contributions he made to marine fisheries research and for his leadership in the maturation of fisheries science to encompass fisheries oceanography, defined as the "appraisal or exploitation of any kind of [marine] organism useful to Man" and "the study of oceanic processes affecting the abundance and availability of commercial fishes."
