According to family lore his French mother (Patricia Jeanne Rousseau Vernier) was related to famed post-impressionist naive painter Henri Rousseau (1844-1910). Naylor’s grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Stauffer, was an accomplished concert pianist and a passionate collector of Beethoven letters and Navajo art. She was also the owner of Lees carpet firm and a millionaire in the 1950s, thus able to hire renowned pianist, conductor and music teacher, Antonia Louisa Brico (1902-1989), for her two grandsons, at a hundred dollars a lesson. Although he played sax and clarinet, Christopher “had a blast” as a drummer, jamming with top rock bands in the 70s. Museums, galleries, concert halls, were natural environments for Christopher, yet a very personal experience at age six “sealed the deal." He was by himself on the playground of his school, when “a message in white light” gave him conviction that he is an artist. Although he studied under Raymond Knaub (1940- ) at Community College of Denver, Naylor considers himself a self-taught artist. After having moved to Los Angeles, and worked for Hanna-Barbera, Disney, Film Roman and Warner Bros. - gathering credits for twenty years - he still finds his own “experiments" the most satisfying. His lifetime fascination with history, geometry, physics and realms of consciousness gives his work a protean facade. “Experiments” are ranging from impeccably cut and layered decoupages to "happy child gesture paintings” and light - shifting resin assemblages suggesting intralumination. Naylor uses layered nylon screen, metal foil, corrugated plastic sheets, repurposed objects for creating an experience of "quantum geometry” resulting from “multi-directionally propagating electromagnetic waves." In his geometric gesture paintings, a linguist identified ancient Chinese characters and prehistoric symbology. Christopher Naylor has been exhibiting in Los Angeles Galleries and art venues for 40+ years. Some of the better known are LACMA, Reynolds Gallery and Ace Gallery."
