Born into an impoverished family in Vermont, Louis made his way to New York City in the 1860s as a teenager where he worked in the hotel and restaurant industry before starting his own confection shop in the early 1880s. From day one, Louis focused on quality in ingredients, packaging design, and presentation and quickly attracted much acclaim for his sweet treat offerings. A favorite among his retail customers were his assorted chocolate boxes hand-packaged in floral tins that were perfect for gifting and also reuse. A luxury in and of themselves, these tins became a symbol of refined taste and a world-classshopping experience that still remains true to this day.
