VTG Japanese Tokuriki Tomikichiro The Great Kinkakuji Temple Woodblock Print Art

Description: Up for sale is this vintage Japanese woodblock art print by famous Japanese artist, Tokuriki Tomikichiro. This one is of the great Kinkakuji Temple looks to be titled / signed in the upper corner. This print has excellent color and detail and is framed and protected behind glass. Frame measures 12.4” inches wide by 16.5” inches long (31.5 cm, 41.9 cm). About the Artist: Born on March 22, 1902 in Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto. He was the twelfth generation of a family of painters in the old family that was in charge of the Honganji temple painting studio. 1924 Graduated at the top of his class from Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, and from the College of Painting. He studied Japanese-style painting under Shunkyo Yamamoto, Bakusen Tsuchida, and Uro Kashiki, and Western-style prints under Keikichi Hino and Tokuzo Oiwa. 1928 Published the coterie magazine "HAN" with Hiratsuka Unichi, Munakata Shiko, and other print artists. 1929 Published the print magazine "Shojo Hanga (Popular Prints)" with the recommendation of Kyomura Tsuchida and others. Exhibited creative prints at the Shunyokai (exhibited continuously for the next 10 years). 1946 Established a printmaking factory at the same time as the end of the war and trained many pupils. Began mass production of industrial prints, produced woodblock prints and hand-slide postcards, and won awards at the All Japan Postcard Competition. 1962 Traveled around the U.S. and Europe for about two months to see antiques and make sketches. 1964 Gave demonstrations in the U.S., U.K., and Germany, and received favorable reviews. 1965 Held his first solo exhibition at Ito Gallery in Ginza, Tokyo. 1968 Held a solo exhibition with Shiko Munakata and others at the Maker Company Department Store in Cleveland, USA. 1978 On April 29, he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, 4th class. 1980 Received the Kyoto City Cultural Merit Award. 1985 Received the Honorary President Award of Honganji Temple. 1990 Supervised the restoration and printing of the National Treasure "Kujaku Myoo" (printed 1,300 times) at Ninna-ji Temple in Kyoto. 1992 Awarded the Special Cultural Merit Prize of Kyoto Prefecture. 1996 Awarded the Ukiyo-e Encouragement Prize by the Ukiyo-e Society of Japan. 2000 He died at the hospital in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto at the age of 98. ————————————————- Would make a fantastic display piece, fine addition to a collection, or a great gift!
